Ok, so I tried to knit my first sweater. That kooky gal over at The Young Dairy Farmer's Wife knitted herself a coupla sweaters and I thought, well heck maybe I can do that.....well well well, lets just say it didn't go well.
Here I am industriously knitting away on a sleeve........at this point I was not aware of the hideous-ness of my lovingly hand knitted garment...........ahh the bliss of ignorance!
I'm a big gal and so I was worried about it not fitting me; therefore I made it the largest size possible. I'm also a very tight knitter, so in order to get the gauge correct, I had to use needles that were about 3 sizes bigger than the pattern called for, AND again because I was worried it wouldn't fit, I made sure to knit as loose as I could. To continue with my list of woes, because the stitches were so loose, when I seamed it up it is atrocious......plus I mattress stitched the seams and I did them backward, so the nice smooth side is inside!
Now, before I show you the picture of my sweater, please remember I said it was my very first sweater as well as all the intel I gave you in paragraph two...........also, there is a light at the end of this sweatery tunnel, I already had the yarn in my stash, so I'm not out any cash!
K, if you think you are ready, here goes............feel free to laugh yourself silly, but if you pee your pants don't expect any sympathy from me!
I'm moving on to socks.........maybe next winter I'll try a sweater again!

Wish it were mine! All you have to do is roll the sleeves up and tack them in place, then wear it with scarves and chunky jewelry and you will be utterly trendy !
ReplyDeleteI tried to crochet once. I ended up with a piece two stitches wide and 26 feet long. So I think you are awesome!!!

ReplyDeleteI would love it. I love big bulky knit sweaters,warm and comfy! That and a pair of comfy jeans and a scarf! you would be fine. long sleeves , like the others said just tac them up
ReplyDeleteThe other thing you might want to try with it ,if you have enough wool is to put a band around the bottom,a couple inches wide.Might hold it in place a bit for you

@mz...I don't think it would shrink cuz it's acrylic....and I giggled out loud at the last part. I've seriously GOT TO STOP GROWING....

I almost peed my pants, LOL Just kiddin, but I did laugh cause your so funny. Its cute, just too big, keep practicing you'll get it. I've never tried to crochet a sweater I'm scared, lol

ReplyDeleteMy husband still comments about the last sweater I made. Didn't check my gauge because I had always been right on, well I wasn't. LOL That sweater would have fit an elephant. I took it apart and it's now an afgan.

Way better than I could ever do, and a loose fit is good for winter nights. I think that is fantastic for a first attempt and I'm sure your next one will be better.

I don't think it's half bad! Actually, that's the look I was going for - seriously. Mine is wide at the bottom, but too short (amazing since I have NO torso) and I wish I'd made the sleeves longer. I'm not too worried about it b/c I made mine to keep me warm while I do chores and it does just that! I wore mine with just a tank top underneath and I got too hot today. Like the preacher who married The Husband and I once told me - it's perfect because it's suited to do it's purpose, like a horse is perfect for running and people are perfect for worshiping God ;}.
ReplyDeleteI'm impressed. Seriously. You really planned for how you knit etc and while it didn't come out exactly as you envisioned, you did well. One of my favorite things about knitting is that I can just rip it out if it doesn't turn out the way I want it to. Good luck on the next sweater and the socks. I love knitting socks...they're portable. :)

I don't know why but when I started reading this i thought of the Friend's episode where Phoebe was trying to make a scarf, got fed up and tied 2 pieces of yarn together and wrapped it around her neck and said, Done. :)
