19 Years...........

19 years ago today I married my best friend.....

We stood before God and our families and joined our lives together into one flesh.....

It's a commitment we take very seriously and one we feel shouldn't be entered into lightly.  I do not think it is a random act that marriage is first mentioned in the book of Genesis chapter 2 verse 24.

We strive for a Biblical marriage and pray for The Youngun to have one someday as well.

I'm so thankful God brought us together and it's been a joy to grow older with this man!

I'm thankful for every day God has given us, and every day He will grant us in the future, and I'm thankful beyond words to know that when we draw our last breath here in this fleeting life, we'll be together again in Heaven.

So thankful that though we don't get to choose how our lives go here on earth, we do get to choose who we go through them with.  I'm thankful The Man chose me, and more thankful that we both chose Him....

Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.  Genesis 2:24

Till next time....

Not Self Sufficient......God Reliant!

So before, in IL we always wanted to be self sufficient and self reliant.  We loved our Jesus, and we thought we were serving Him.  As a matter of fact, had someone tried to tell me that we weren't doing all we could for the Lord, I would have given them an ear-full!
However, that said, and if anyone remembers God had been telling us for over 2 years that He wanted us to do something else and we weren't listening.  We said, nope, he's been at this job for 9 years!  The health insurance!  The vacation time!  The 401K!!!  Our house, our garden, our fruit trees, our barns!!
Well fast forward to the months after The Man lost his job and we really started to figure out what it means to trust in the Lord.  See before, we wanted to trust God and we thought we did, and we probably did, just not enough.  The job was our security, the health insurance and the home.  That isn't where true security comes from!!  True, peaceful security comes from our Heavenly Father and NOWHERE else.
God led us to Montana, which was a fantastic adventure, and then He led us back to KY.  After being back in KY for a year and living next door to The Man's sister, we were praying hard for a place to call our own.  The bankruptcy made it impossible to get a mortgage and it looked as if we were a long way out from our own place.  We prayed and looked, and looked and prayed, and none of the houses we looked at would work out.  We went to the bank, they told us to get a credit card to rebuild our credit.......ah, no thanks!  There was a little house trailer for sale about 2 miles over from where we were living.  It was on the highway and looked pretty run down.  We must have driven past it dozens of times and saw the for sale by owner sign.  We would say, no, we don't want it, it's on the highway, it's too small, too old, too shabby, whatever.  One Sunday before church, I was looking on C/L for places for sale by owner.  That little place was on there with some pictures of the inside.  I thought, hmm, I could make this work!  We decided to email about the ad and lay it all out on the line.  I sent an email asking if they would consider owner financing with a generous down payment.  Off we went to church........and when we got home there was an email from the owner.  He said he would do an owner finance and would we like to look at the property that afternoon?  We met him over there on Sunday afternoon and to our surprise the little house trailer came with 3.2 acres of land!  We stood in the driveway and talked to the owner for over an hour, mostly about God!  He shook our hands, told us he'd never done an owner finance before, but said he felt that it was what he was supposed to do!  We closed on the house, signed papers at his attorney's and took possession that Thursday, 4 days after first looking at the place.
It is amazing how things fall RIGHT INTO PLACE when you are truly where God wants you to be.......

Until next time........I remain yours in Christ,

Remember Me??

It's been a long time hasn't it?  I've missed blogging, but for some reason it's been really emotional to begin again.  But now, I feel God pulling me to start again, so here we go!
Life is about the journey and our sole purpose in being born and going about of our lives is to bring Glory to our Savior.  In my life, sometimes I've done that, but most of the time I've fallen far short of the mark.  I can't count the times I'm sure I've disappointed my Jesus, but He's never left me, and never forsaken me and I have no words to describe His Faithfulness.  We are so undeserving, and He is so generous!
Things are going swimmingly for us!  The Youngun is now a Sophmore in High School.  Being back in public school has not all been sunshine and roses, but with God's guidance we've managed to raise a daughter with values and morals, who knows the importance of communication.  We are able as a family to work through the situations that arise and I'm thankful for that.  She had her first boyfriend that lasted about 5 months, and even though they hugged, they didn't kiss because she wasn't ready for that.  She ended the relationship for some very mature reasons that I'm so thankful for as a Momma!  The Boy had some "issues" that scared me as a parent, and we talked about them freely and in a non-judgmental way, and she came to the conclusion to end it on her own.  I was actually quite surprised (but very happy) when she told me.
God has allowed us to buy our own place and I'll blog about that in future, he's given us a job where we are working together, truly working together, and other than our house (which will be paid for in 6 years God willing) and our car, we are debt free!
I've missed blogging, and have thought to take it up again several times.  For some reason it makes me feel very vulnerable!  However, that being said, reading back over my blog makes me smile, brings things to mind that I've forgotten, and gives me a pretty accurate online diary of what we've been up to.  Writing it down in a notebook just doesn't feel, or work the same!
So.....I'm possibly beginning the blog foray again.  I've got lots to share and lots to say and lots of wonderful ways in which our Heavenly Father has blessed us that I want to tell the world about!
Until next time, I remain yours in Christ,

Happy Birthday to Me.....

Today I turn 36 years young!  Uh......that's about all I got.......LOL!

In other news, sorta birthday related...I've decided not to cut my hair until my 40th birthday (if I even cut it then).  I'm not sure the last time scissors touched my hair, but it was in Montana so it's been close to 8 or 10 months.  That will basically be 5 years of growing my hair and I'm excited to see how long it will get.

This is a picture of my hair after taking it down for the day.  I wear it up all day long for work.  (Yup, I'm a working outside the home woman these days.  A blog about that will come soon.)  Anywho, I took it down last night before showering and had The Man take a picture of it.  I'll update it each year on my birthday so I can see how long it's getting.

I haven't used my homemade shampoo in a loooong time and I miss it.  I may start using it again soon......

Until next time.......may God Bless and keep you!

Hi All!

Just a quick note to let you all know I'm still alive.  I'm takin' a much needed and rather refreshing technology break and it feels great.  Sometimes I get too wrapped up in bloggin' about life instead of livin' life!  First thing I'd do in the morning was turn the computer on and I was readin' blogs before even doin' chores!  Not good.  For whatever reason, I lost my desire to even turn the computer on and I'm goin' with it.

I've been sewin' my brains out and we've got some little Muscovy ducklings in the chicken house.  My chicks will be here in a couple weeks and a couple weeks after that Star will be kidding.  We bought a little 14' fishing boat and are enjoying that very much.  The maiden voyage of "Catfish Hunter" netted me a 5 1/2 # channel cat and The Man an 8 pounder!  We've also been findin' the heck out of morels, and getting them in the freezer for future use.

No garden as the weather isn't cooperating.  I'm trying not to freak out about that and figure it will get in when it gets in!

Thanks to all of you who've emailed to make sure I'm ok, and I hope you aren't mad at me for not bloggin'.  I'm just enjoying the spring weather!

I hope you are all fit and sassy and enjoying bein' alive!

God Bless......................

In Honor Of Our Anniversary.........

A while back Nicole over at That's Life did  this little poll on her blog.  Since The Man and I are celebrating our 15th wedding anniversary tomorrow I thought I'd do it too, so here goes!

♥ How long have you been together?

We will celebrate our 15th wedding anniversary on March 30; we've been together since January 30 of the same year..........so we've been together for 15 years and 2 months!  hehe

♥ How long did you know each other before you started dating?

Ummm, well we knew each other for about 6 months, but we were both dating other people during that time.

♥ How old are each of you?

He will be 38 in July of this year, and I turned 34 in January of this year.

♥ Whose siblings do/ did you see the most?

I have one sister and he has 5 siblings (step, full, and half).  I'd say we see my sister more, even though it isn't all that often, we for sure see her more than his siblings.

♥ Do you have any children together?

We have our beautiful Youngun who we love very much!

♥ What about pets?

We have three dogs in the house, as well as a barn cat, a horse, two G.O.S. hogs, and three goats.....right now..........oh yeah and a betta fish and some sea monkeys!

♥ Which situation is the hardest on you as a couple?

Hmm, nothing really.  We are a force, a solid wall against any and all opposition.  We are a pretty darned formidable team!  When we first got married, the first year, that was a bit rough.  But we really truly are joined as one.  If he has a problem it is my problem and vice versa.  We don't let ANYTHING or ANYONE come between us as a couple, so I think that keeps things from stressing our "couple-hood".

♥ Did you go to the same school?

No, we didn't even live in the same county.

♥ Are you from the same home town?

Again, nope.

♥ Who is the most sensitive?

That would be me, although he can be a big ole softy at times!

♥ Where do you eat out most as a couple?

We like to go to this little hole in the wall diner, The Sunset a coupla towns over.  Great service, good food, super cheap and we can go there after working outside all day without a shower first! ;0)

♥ Where is the furthest you two have traveled together as a couple?

Myrtle Beach South Carolina

♥ Who has the worst temper?

Hmmm, well mine burns hot and fast, and shows up lots more than his does, but when he does finally let loose, buildings have been known to explode.............I'm just sayin'

♥ Who does the cooking?

That would be me........

♥ Who is more social?

Neither of us.  We don't really "do" people..........LOL!

♥ Who is the neat-freak?

That would be him, but we both like to keep things neat.  I like things neat and orderly, and a mess makes me nervous, but he has a problem.........he's a stacker.  When we first got married, when it was close to time for him to get home from work, I'd lay the phone book down on the floor and without missing a beat, as he came in the door he'd stoop down to pick it up!  Papers on the desk or counter?  They have to be perfectly stacked for him!

♥ Who is the more stubborn?

I'd say we are both pretty stubborn, but since I'm the Goodwife, he has final say on everything.  If we are doing a project he will listen to my ideas and opinions and oftentimes we do things my way, but if he KNOWS how he wants to do it, nothing will sway him and I respect that!

♥ Who hogs the bed?

I prefer to say that I'm a cuddler and leave it at that!

♥ Who wakes up earlier?

I do.  I'm an early bird.  Of course that's only relevant on weekends cuz we get up before the crickets go to bed during the week.

♥ Where was your first date?

Steak n Shake........he picked me up in his horrendous car, we got a flat tire, got it fixed, went to eat, went back to his house and I never left!  About a week later, he asked me to marry him in a Wendy's parking lot in said car while the song "I Hate Everything About You" was playing on the radio.

♥ Who has the bigger family?

Sibling wise, he does, but we both have pretty good sized extended families.

♥ Do you get flowers often?

Twice in 15 years, I don't need flowers......

♥ How do you spend the holidays?

Christmas and Thanksgiving with family, the others..... simply together!

♥ How long did it take to get serious?

Um, see the above questions.......it took about 5 minutes.  Sometimes you just know you've found "the one".

♥ Who does/ did the laundry?

I'm a homemaker so I do most of the house stuff, although when he's on vacation, or weekends when we are both very busy 'round our homestead, he has no problem pitching in and helping me out.

K, so that's that!  Anything I didn't tell you you'd like to know?  Just ask.......my life is an open book.  As disturbing as that may be.................

God Bless..............

Chronic Ordinary Urticaria........or Goodwife Gotta Rash!

"I have a simple philosophy. Fill what's empty. Empty what's full. And scratch where it itches."
Alice Roosevelt Longworth (1884 - 1980)

This is pretty much how I live my life, but for the purpose of this post, we are going to address the part about scratching where it itches.......

For at least two years now, I've had hives. Hives, hives, hives! Oh the hives I've had. All....over....my....body...all....the....time!! I'm one of those who doesn't go to the doctor, but finally last year I went and they did a blood test for allergies. They called me and told me the test came back normal and that was that. Still with the hives all the time, but I just lived with it, cuz that's just the way I roll. Uncle Big Dog had hives too, and that is comin' into play in the next paragraph.

Around Christmas time Uncle Big Dog started havin' some trouble with a kidney stone and they found out he had a mass on his kidney. That mass turned out to be cancer and after lots more tests they took that rotten ole kidney out and Uncle Big Dog is doin' just fine. The cancer was contained to just that one kidney, thank God, and he should recover with no more trouble. They also told him, his hives might go away now, they could've been caused by the kidney cancer. And that got my little pea brain to workin'.

I went back to the doctor today because I thought maybe there might be somethin' wrong with my kidney and it's better to be safe than sorry. The doctor didn't think so, but we did get talkin' bout those silly hives I keep havin'. I asked him if I should see an allergist and he said, "Well we already know you are allergic to everything!" Evidently whoever called to tell me the tests were fine was a tad misinformed.

I'm allergic to.........are you ready???
  • corn
  • wheat
  • peanuts
  • sesame seeds
  • there was more foods on there but I don't remember them all
  • oak trees, well pretty much every single tree known to man
  • cockroaches (seriously??)
  • pigweed
  • ragweed, well remember what I said about trees, it goes for weeds too
  • timothy hay (hmmmm)
  • bermuda grass hay (again, hmmmm)
There is more, three pages worth, but I can't remember it all. Pretty fun for a gal like me to be allergic to all trees, weeds, and hay isn't it? He said he wasn't too sure this all was causing the hives because my allergy level to it wasn't all that high, but I am allergic to all that good stuff.

So what to do? Nothin'. He says I can take Zyrtec for the hives and they'll go away eventually (it's been 2 years here folks). Now wasn't that helpful??

And folks think doctors don't know anything.............are ya pickin' up on the sarcasm here, cuz I'm layin' it on purty thick........

God Bless..............

Homesteading Update..........

Well well well.........it seems you can try to take the girl off'n the homestead, but you can't take the homestead outta the girl.........

After some discussing with the Big Dog (aka, Hubby)

I've decided to get Tulip and Star knocked up again.  Hubster wants to get a couple feeder pigs in the spring and if I'm going to have an outlet for my extra milk, then I want to be milking again.  We are also ordering chicks in the spring.......6 or 8 laying pullets for me and 15 or so Cornish X for the freezer, with maybe a few turkey poults tossed in for good measure.

Once again I have to praise God in His Infinite Wisdom in keeping us here on our place.  We would have been absolutely miserable in a little house in town or even living on the beach in Florida.  Yet another case of God knowing what we need, even when we are cornfuzed!

To explain The Crisis  in short..........I can't.  The only thing I can think of is that we were overwhelmed and confused.  Everybody gets down and The Man and I are no exception to that.  Our Faith keeps us afloat, but we of course have moments of sadness and desperation even.  The key difference in The Crisis is that we were both down at the same time.  That doesn't usually happen.  Usually when one of is is discouraged and feeling blue, the other lifts us up and helps us to see the positive side.  This time we were down in the hole together.  Through it all, we have immense Faith and we're just looking for God to tell us what to do.

This time around I'm going to keep a short leash on my animals situation.  By only having pullets (no rooster) I won't end up with 40+ chickens running 'round eating me out of house and home.  I will miss setting chicks and seeing this.....

But that's what pictures are for!

I'm also not going to keep a buck goat here year round.  I just want to have Tulip and Star and milk them.  I'll hire out my womanizer instead of feeding him (and dealing with him) the whole year round to breed two does!  As for babies, they will be sold at weaning or else kept for the freezer.  It may be hard, but a family of three does not NEED 11 GOATS!  At least my family of 3 doesn't!  This will keep my stress level as well as my feed bill down to a manageable rate.

My garden is also being pared down.  I'll no longer have the smaller upper garden, just focusing on the big lower garden.  I'm going to keep myself to under a dozen tomato plants (instead of 34) and focus on the core crops that we really use.

After this last vacation The Man knows more than ever that he would go coo coo crazy without our land.  He is too much of a do-er and I think he'd die of boredom.  However, he is learning that Rome wasn't built in a day and all the little projects that we want to do, can wait until we have the time or most importantly, the inclination, to do them.

As my blog title states........we are Thickin' and Thinnin' here at Goodwife Farm.  We never know what the Good Lord has in store for us, but we are game for it all.  With our hands firmly in His and our hearts open to His guidance we press on into the future!

K.......on that supremely corny, yet udderly true note........

God Bless......

And These Are The Horses Of My Life...........From Champ Forward to the Future.....

Welcome to the continuing saga of The Horses Of My Life.....if you've missed the first two installments click here and here to get caught up.

In October of 2000, Champ came into my life and I've had a few horses after him, all the while never letting him go.

First I had Faith, a rescued Arab mare that had more than a few screws loose. It wasn't her fault, she'd just been abused one too many times and it had scarred her.  She was a gorgeous Egyptian bred mare, little but lovely.  I sold her to a wonderful woman who had her free lunging around her within 5 minutes of meeting her.  I have tons of pictures of this gorgeous mare, but they are all on the little square disks and I can't get them off!

Then there was Dolly, an App mare I bought because I thought maybe I could get The Man to ride with me. Dolly tossed me off over her head the first time I rode her out of the pasture, and struck the clippers out of my hand the first time I got close to her so she went back to her old owner.  I can handle fear, but fear that manifests itself in aggression isn't acceptable at my house.

Honey was the neighbor's mare who was older than Methuselah (late 20's) and I brought her to my house to rehab her and get some weight on her.

Honey and The Youngun before she decided she was afraid of heights and didn't want to ride.

She was a Three Bars bred quarter horse who was an angel of an old mare and I was able to get her back into pretty decent shape. She was the first horse I ever sat on in an English saddle and I enjoyed riding her. The only reason I gave her back to the neighbor was because we moved and I could only take Champ with me. Getting rid of him was not an option!

Champ, winter of 2009
When we moved down here to get closer to The Man's work, we bought a house in town so I had to board Champ. I actually enjoyed it because I worked at the barn and was there all day long while The Youngun was in kindergarten. I was in horse lovin' heaven and I learned SO much at that barn. After I'd been there for right at a year, I bought a yearling named Boss.

Camptown Boss
Oh how I loved that boy! He was a draft cross and I did all his training myself. After living in the house in town for right at a year, things fell apart at the barn (way too much to get into in this long post) and The Man decided it was time to buy land again, so I could have the horses at home. We all three missed having a garden and such, as this was the first time we'd lived in town. We bought the place we have now and moved the horses home. I had always wanted to train my own horse, and having Boss was amazing. I did all of his training myself and we got along great.

Boss was a natural jumper, if he could get his head over it, he'd go over it!
He was a big boy and really beautiful. I started him under saddle very lightly at 3 and then started him more at 4. Things were going well until we decided to trot. He put his head down between his front legs and went to stiff-legged buckin'. That took me right back to my childhood and scared me.
Boss and I during another brief slim period in my life.
Boss, one of the first few times I was on him.
I can do rearing, I can do spooking, but bucking is my undoing. I kept up with his ground training, but was at a stand still with the under saddle stuff. I tried to get my old trainer to help me, but he wouldn't take him on unless he was broke; walk, trot, canter. Duh..if he was at that point, I could take back over!!
Boss and Champ together

Anyway, he turned 5 and I decided it wasn't fair to him for me to be holding him back and I sold him. He is in St. Louis somewhere competing in Hunter/Jumper, which is what he was born to do. I have moments where I regret selling him, but I've never regretted buying him. That big flashy boy taught me so much about training and trust and I'm thankful to have known him.

Boss and I
I have to confess that I really enjoy having only one horse.  That way I don't feel as if I'm neglecting one or the other, and I'm not torn between two.  Champ has Tulip and Star (the goat girls) to keep him company and I spend a lot of time with him.

After all of these negative experiences, you'd think the love would have flickered and died in me, but it is as strong now as it was at 3, probably stronger because now I know how wonderful it can be.  I look forward to carefully selecting my new partner when Champ is gone, because he has taught me how wonderful the bond between the right horse and rider can be!

God Bless....................

And These Are The Horses Of My Life........Part 2....The Teen Years....

If you have missed the first episode, you can click here to get caught up.

When I was 13 I had a much, much older distant cousin who had horses. He had a 2 year old Appaloosa mare named Gypsy that he wanted to sell me.

Gypsy and I in one of my senior pictures

Of course, I was horse crazy and didn't care what I got as long as I had something. He talked my folks into letting me buy her for $200 and she came home. The very first day I had her she was standing tied and pitched such a fit I was terrified to get near her. Things went downhill from there....LOL! She was such a nasty mare. I could handle her now with no problem because I'm experienced and know what to do, but boy when I was a kid it was awful. She got so nasty I couldn't even walk in the pasture. She would charge me with her ears pinned back and teeth snappin'. Every time I got on her I got thrown. I used to sing Amazin' Grace while I rode because I was so scared!

Gypsy and I.  Notice the tie down, to keep her from flipping over with me.  I cringe now when I see that bit and tie down.  I won't ride in anything stronger than a d-ring snaffle now, let alone a tie down!

She gave me whiplash twice and flipped over backwards with me once. Such a heifer she was.  She really wasn't a bad mare, she just needed an experienced rider and I wasn't it! She was physically a lovely mare though and I loved her.

Me shortly before selling Gypsy.  You'll notice this was one of  my many and brief periods of being slim.

I sold her when I was 17 back to the cousin I bought her from for the same amount of money, and I cried when she left.

You'd think I'd had enough wouldn't you? But no.........I started looking for another horse. Went and looked at a gorgeous black leopard App gelding. He was only 3, which turned me off, and he was BIG. I should have bought that horse. He was a wonderful, honest gelding and I think we'd have gotten along great. However, I had taken a friend with me and she talked me out of him, because he was big so he'd eat a lot and he was young.

This is Star two weeks after I got her.  Pretty no?  But I quickly learned that pretty is as pretty does!

She talked me into buying a Quarab mare named Star that was nuttier than a pet coon. Every time you touched her belly or her flank she would squeal and kick. Saddling her was an experience, let me tell you. Needless to say I think I only rode her a handful of times. This is the mare I had when I met The Man, and I talked about her briefly here.

Is the love dead and gone?  Will she ever find a horse to love her as much as she loves him?  Stay tuned for the next installment of.................And These Are The Horses Of My Life.........

God Bless...........

And These Are The Horses Of My Life.........The Beginning.....

This will be first in a series of posts, as doing it all in one will be too much!

Sorry this is so blurry, but this is me at 1 year old, with my first trusty steed, the only one to never throw me off!

As I've mentioned before, the horse lovin' bug hit me early and it hit me hard. I'm the only person in my family who I know to actually have this affliction, that has lasted beyond a brief childhood stint, except for my cousin Kate and she's still a kid so we'll have to see.

The first horses I remember in my life were a couple of matched ponies named Caesar and Daisy. I have no idea what type of pony they were, but for some reason we called them "Baby Belgians". They were bay and Daisy had a bald face with one blue eye. They were broke to harness and my maternal grandfather used to take us in a little covered wagon or behind a fancy "doctor's" buggy that he owned.

In this picture, Caesar is on the off side, Daisy on the near side.  My sister and I are in the wagon.  I am getting ready to turn 2 in this picture and I'm in the green hat.

(For clarification purposes you should know that these are the grandparents that abused my sister.)

I loved those little ponies so much, but it was on Caesar that my bad luck with horses was to begin. My grandmother had put me up on Caesar's back to sit while my grandfather was running the backhoe. Not a good idea. My grandma knew NOTHING about horses and he got spooked, reared and I fell off. One of my earliest memories is of laying on the ground and watching those hooves coming down at me. I was three. It scared the bejeezus out of me, and that started a fear of horses that took over 20 years to conquer. It might have scared me but it didn't diminish my love of these beautiful creatures.

This is my sister and I on Daisy.  My sister is in the front in the red hat and I'm on behind in my green hat.

My grandparents were not the best animals stewards in the world. Actually they weren't very good people at all, but without them there would be no Mom and without Mom there'd be no me so......... Anyway, one winter we had an ice storm and the next morning Caesar was running the fence whinnying for all he was worth.  My grandfather went out there and Caesar led him to Daisy.  She had fallen down the hill and broken her neck. Caesar was around for quite awhile after that but I think he was eventually sold.  He wasn't broke to drive single so he wasn't messed with anymore.  I remember several older cousins trying to ride him and every one of them being tossed off.  He would buck like a little mini saddle bronc!

The next horse to enter my life was a little black mare named Comanche. She was probably about 13 hands or so and really beautiful in my eyes.

This is my sister with Comanche.  I couldn't find a photo of me with her, although I know there are at least a couple around somewhere.
I loved her as well, but once again, not a good horse for a timid little girl. My dad used to ride her but one day she threw him and came down on his knee. That was the end of him riding her! She was pastured with our cows and one very early spring she kicked a cow in the belly, causing her to miscarry. Needless to say, Comanche was sold............

Please stay tuned for the next installment of These Are The Horses Of My Life.......

God Bless.........

Inquiring Minds Want to Know???

Some of my dear readers expressed interest that I can and do use a chainsaw on a regular basis.  Lest any of you should think I'm of a special extraction, I'm going to list some of my foibles here.

Okay, okay, so I know nobody really cares, but I'm gonna tell you anyway!
Some interesting *giggle, gasp, snort, wheeze* facts about the Goodwife.......
  • I can run a chainsaw all day long, but the subtle nuances of the weed eater continue to elude me.  Seriously, I've tried to conquer this evil machine and it never, ever goes well.
  • I can whip up culinary delights from scratch and with nary a recipe to guide me, but successfully preparing boxed macaroni and cheese remains out of my grasp.
  • I can pluck a chicken, gut a chicken, make said chicken's severed feet dance to "Hello My Baby" but the actual killing of said bird is not in my rep-wa-twa.
  • See number 3 in regards to bunny wabbits....
  • I'm afraid of latex balloons; the Mylar ones don't bother me at all.
  • I can climb the roof to clean gutters or check the chimney, but getting close to the clear glass barrier at the upper level of the mall is my undoing.  Mind you I think I've been to the mall twice in the last 10 years, but that is neither here nor there, you get the point.
  • Beautiful teenage girls intimidate the hell out of me.......
  • Lets just make that beautiful women in general.
  • I like earthworms a great deal, but other worms really, really gross me out, particularly big fat ones like tomato worms.
  • I can't stand it when people vomit on movies.  I cover my eyes or avert my face until that part is over!
  • Finally, and perhaps most disturbinglt..........I find Tommy Chong oddly sexy.........

Ok, so now you know some fascinating facts about the Goodwife (yes, I am taking some creative license in my use of the adjective fascinating); Please tell me some schtuff 'bout you!

Finding My Bliss............It's Been MIA for Awhile......

Now that The Crisis has passed and things are settling down I'm finding my bliss again.  It's really been gone for a loooong time and I didn't realize it until recently.  I think getting so overwhelmed with my critter situation is what brought it on as well as some other issues that I may or may not blog about at a later time.

I've come to understand that God didn't want us to move, he just wanted us to sloooow dowwwwnn.  We can be a little dense sometimes (especially me) and I'm always so focused on figuring out what God wants us to do that I can be a little overzealous at times.  (No kidding Goodwife??  You??).  I went through a pretty serious identity crisis and I have no freakin' clue what that was caused by.  I suppose it could be my 30's, my family history, my weight crisis.  Who knows and I don't think the why of it matters so much as the outcome.  I'm working really hard on finding me again.  There is a song by Miranda Lambert that is really speaking to me at this time.  It's called The House That Built Me, and I love it..  It almost moves me to tears everytime I hear it and that's a lot cuz it's on my ipod.  I was just listening to it a bit ago while I was building my character (scooping poop) and I was inspired to write this blog post.  For some reason I've been denying who I am lately and I'm taking steps to change that.  Getting back to my roots of who I really truly am.

Me and Champ, about 5 years ago.
I love horses.  I've loved horses my entire life.  It's an odd relationship that is directly related to my struggles to lose weight, but that's probably way more psycho-babble than you are prepared to read, but I will say that being heavy has made me feel unworthy in regards to horses.  Anywho.........I've been trying to convince myself for the last few years that I'm "over" this love.  HA!  Not even close and that takes away a large part of my bliss.  I'm the ONLY SINGLE PERSON in my family who has this sad affliction.  I'm not just talking about my little family of 3, I'm talking about my extended family.  Now some of you may know that The Man and I don't do things seperately on the weekend.  That's good and I won't change that for anything.  That said, I need to ride, I need to play with my pony, I need to smell him, and feed him carrots, and brush him and when I don't a little part of me dies.  A little part of me has been dead for awhile now.  I'm bringin' her back to life though.  My old man Champ is a partial nutball and I can't ride him down the road.  That and not having a trailer greatly limits my riding (since you can cover 5 acres on a horse in about 5 minutes!)  I do have neighbors though and if I wasn't such a dumbass I could ask them if I could ride.  I've decided to stop being a dumbass..........  I'm going to ask if I can ride the edges of their fields and find my bliss.

The Man is finding his bliss as well.  My husband wants water.  He's always wanted water.  We've discussed buying a lake lot, moving to the lake, moving to Florida, anything to get him on water.  When we got back from Florida he said "Ya know, I'm standing here looking at our place and I'm thinking...if I had a pond full of catfish here, would I want to move?  The answer is no."  This week we've got a guy coming to give us a bid on a small pond, and BAM, The Man has his bliss as well!

The Youngun will have her bliss as long as she's got her Granny and Pop Pop, her Darling Auntie, and her Cousin L.  With us staying here, she will not be taken away from them and that's another beautiful thing.

We are committed to slowing things down. Rome wasn't built in a day and our little projects don't have to be completed in a day either.  We have a beautiful place but we are so frantically working on it, that we never take time to just enjoy it!

God is good, and I'm so thankful that no matter how stupid, selfish, corn-fuzed, or messed up we get, He's still good and He's still there!

Now go find your Bliss, or if you haven't lost it, go enjoy it!!  ;)

God Bless.........

A Perfect World......My Thoughts on God and Freewill.......

Oh oh, here we go..........the Goodwife's been thinkin' again.  I was just vaccuming my hardwood floors when this popped into my head.  As you know, if it pops in, I gotta let it out and share it with you all.......so here we go.

God gave us free will.  He could have made us robots, or dummies, or I don't know what, but He chose instead to make us human, full of failings and oh so very full of free will.  We have so many choices in our day to day lives.  God doesn't force us to do the right thing.  He usually doesn't strike us down in the midst of a bad choice, no matter how bad or even evil that choice is.  That's because He wants us to repent and He wants us to have the chance to make the right choice the next time.  That's powerful love, that is.

Being Christian isn't about living in a bubble away from temptations and the world.  It's about being faced with evil and temptations every day and making the right Godly decision.  God put us all here in the midst of immorality and decay and said Do the right thing even when the wrong thing is easier or more fun.  I used to think abortion wouldn't exist in a perfect world.  Now I think in a perfect world, abortion would be an option, but no one would ever do it, because even though evil would exist, humans would rise above it the way God wants us to.  Ya know??

It's very hard to convey what I want to in the written word.  I'm a much better oral communicator, but I hope you got at least the gist of what I was saying.  As always, feel free to comment and disagree and as long as you keep the hate out, I'll leave 'em up!

Till next time..........God Bless!

Sold!!

And not a moment too soon!  Millie and Heather are gone.  I put them on craigslist yesterday and a guy came and picked them up today.  No regrets and if they weren't bottle babies I would have loved them.  I'll say it again though.........the Goodwife ain't cut out for bottle feeding.  I HATE it and will never do it again.  My stress level was through the roof the entire time I've had these clingy, silly, obnoxious things.  Live, learn, and move on!

I also wanted to let ya'll know I'm taking a bit of a bloggin' break.  I'm still here and will still be here, just got lots on my mind and am taking a step back to regroup.  I'll post if somethin' exciting or profound comes up, or if God puts somethin' on my heart, but it will probably be hit and miss for awhile.  ;)

Till next time...........
God Bless!

Memories of Grampa and Gran'ma.....

My grandpa was a salty old soul.  Only went through the 6th grade as so many boys of his generation did, he was in the Army and fought in Korea before marrying my grandma.  He was a paratrooper and got shot in the lower back.  Grandpa has a purple heart among other medals, but I don't know what.  I've never seen them and he never talked about it to anybody except for me.  About the only thing he ever said was he asked me if I'd ever eaten sushi.  He said It wadn't bad except for the eyeballs.............  He told me stories about being a young boy and rollin' up corn husks and smoking them and he taught me lots about fishin' and gardenin'.  He was a truck driver for most of my dad's childhood and then he worked at Mobil Chemical until he got sick and couldn't work anymore.

Grandpa and Grandma with their Christmas present of pictures of me and my sister.  I'm on the left in the Ernie shirt...

I don't ever remember my grandpa not sick.  He got sick the year after I was born, so I don't remember him any other way.  He had diabetes, congestive heart failure, gout, and a slew of other troubles.  He taught me a lot about how to be.  No matter how sick he was, you could go in the bedroom and say How ya feelin' Grampa?  and he'd always say Purty good, or Oh I'm tollable...... On his good days he'd go out to the garage and sit in a padded rocking chair and tinker.  He made bird houses, and picnic tables and all kind of stuff from that chair.  On his bad days he'd have a TV tray set up next to the bed with a dismantled VCR on it.  He'd roll over, reach out and tinker for a few minutes, then roll back over to rest.  He never complained, EVER that I'd heard of.  Oh he'd get grouchy with others but he never complained.  When I was a real little girl I used to love going to visit him in the hospital.  He was always on the cardic floor and the nurses would take us in the little room and show us our Grandpa's print out.  She'd tear a big long sheet of it off and let us take it home.......See, that's your grandpa's heart beats!  He always, always saved part of his supper for us, and I grew to love hospital mashed taters and gravy.  I'll never forget once when I was older, probably about 15 or 16, he was in the hospital and I was up there with Gran'ma.  He'd just put a big ole wad of skoal in and the doctor came in.  Grandpa got all wild eyed and frantically started brushing the sheet off where he'd spilled skoal.  The doctor came sauntering over, looked at Grandpa appraisingly, and said....Open your mouth Charlie.......Grandpa shook his head no.....Charlie, open your mouth......again, a kind of a grunt and frantic head shaking No!  Charlie, OPEN your mouth.....Grandpa took a big ole gulp and when he opened his mouth there wasn't nary a bit of skoal in sight!  It's so funny cuz there was little bits of chew all over the bed, and he'd been spittin' in the trash can.  It wasn't like he was foolin' anybody!

Me with a catfish...I was 3 years old.  That is Dad and Sister 3 in the background...
He and my grandma used to take me and my sister camping in the old slide in pickup truck camper.  I was just amazed by the gas lamps that were on the wall!  My gramps was an amazing fisherman.  He's have 6 poles lined up on the bottom, fishin' for catfish.  He'd hook a fish and then holler Come'ere Skunk! and real this 'un in for me!  I never lost a fish that Grandpa hooked for me no matter how long it took my little 5 year old self to get it hauled into the bank!  We used to fish at a place called Lake Greenwood.  Fishing there with my daddy and Grandpa are some of my earliest and clearest memories.  There was a big sandy washout and we'd walk down that and sit on the spit of sand at the bottom to fish.  Grandpa always fished out of an old metal folding chair, and the legs of that chair would sink down so far that he was almost sitting on the ground.  I remember once trying to set the hook in a fish like Grandpa did..........my line came flying outta that water so fast!  It smacked into the bank behind us.  Grandpa just chuckled and shook his head.  Oh how I loved that man.

Spending the night at Grandma and Grandpa's I'd get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom and Grandpa'd be standing in the kitchen with a spatula in hand.  Want an fried egg samwitch? he'd say.  Grandpa....it's 1 in the mornin!  Why would I want a fried egg samwitch?  He's the first person I remember making me an ice cream cone at home. I thought that was just amazing...ice cream cones at home!  When I was little, every Sunday after church we went to Grandma and Grandpa's for sunday dinner (meaning the noon meal).  All my dad's sisters would be there (except for Sister 3) and his brother.  My cousins would be there and it was such a good memory.  I miss those times.

Now don't get me wrong, Grandpa had his faults.  He was a crotchety old sort and especially hard on my dad, (his oldest child).  They never did really get on too well, but the three of us spent lots of time together and they loved each other.  They were too much alike to get on very well, just like me and my dad are, although my daddy and I have a much better relationship than he and grandpa had.  He was hard on my Grandma too.  They were pretty much just like Archie and Edith Bunker, you know, from the TV show?  I don't remember him ever saying a cross word to me though.  I could ask him anything and I spent lots of fond hours at his knee, soaking up anything he wanted to tell me about.  He taught me about the proper way to raise livestock, how to make things grow and thrive.  He died when The Youngun was 18 months old and I still miss him so much.

Left to right...Dad, Grandpa holding the Youngun, me......

Grandma got cancer when I was a senior in high school or maybe it was shortly after I graduated.

It was such a shock to us because she was always so cheerful and happy,  always so healthy.  She got sick and they gave her 3 months.  She lived 3 years after that, always cheerful and hopeful. I miss her so much too.  When she gave you a kiss, boy you stayed kissed!  She's put both hands on either side of your face, scrunch it together and pull you in for a nice hard pucker right on the mouth.  Oh how I'd like to have one of those kisses right now!   She was always there when we needed her.  She'd call every single day (even though she lived only about 6 blocks away) to see how ever'body was.  Just callin' to see how you'uns was doin' is all.....  She died when I was 3 months pregnant with The Youngun.  A mercy at the end with the cancer and all, but it sure doesn't make you miss them any less.  The Youngun was her first great - grandchild and she never got to see her.  She did know about her though and that makes me happy.   Such a packrat Grandma was!  I remember once cleaning her freezer out for her.  I found bags of peaches in there that were 20 years old!  Grandma never took a music lesson in her life, but Grandpa bought her an old organ at the sale barn and she could sit down at that thing and play hymns by ear. Complete with chords and everything!  I don't remember Grandma ever sayin' a bad word about anybody.  She was always smilin' and happy.

Grandma in the background, isn't she lovely!  My sister, me on the floor, who knows what I'm doing...Grandpa laying down.

Grandma, me, my sister
I do remember a time when she got fired up at me.  I was a young teenager, and Grandpa was havin' a bad spell.  I went down to visit them and talk with Grandpa, see what I could do.  Grandma went in the bedroom and said Charlie, Sarah is here and she's gonna have some toast with us.  Now I'd already eaten breakfast and wasn't hungry and was trying to lose weight.  I said Grama, I don't want no toast, I'm not hungry.  I'll never forget her lookin' at me with her eyes blazing......You are gonna eat some toast because I think if you eat Granpa will eat!!  Brother, I ate toast!  LOL!

She willed my grandpa back from death I don't know how many times.  And then when she got sick, he kept himself going for her.  He was determined not to die before she did.  After she died, he just wilted away.  He pretty much stopped eating.  He was always a big solid man, a good 300 lbs in his prime.  He wasted away down to nothing after she died.  He'd go all day and eat nothing but a chicken leg.  I made a sort of spice bread/fruit cake that he really liked, so I'd make those up for him and he'd eat that.  They had brandy in them and I've never made one since he died.  Still have half a bottle of that brandy in the cabinet.

Grandpa opening Christmas presents.  This was The Youngun's first Christmas as well as the second Christmas without Grandma..  Left to right...Grandpa, my mom, The Youngun, Dad, cousin L.  Sister 1, me in striped sweater, cousin K, cousin M (white sweater)

So many things make me think of Grandpa and Grandma.........every time I use a pressure cooker.  Every time I make vegetable soup, or cook neckbones.  Everytime I go fishin' or work in the garden, or hear an organ they come to mind.    He and Grandma were such a huge part of my childhood, such good influences on my life.  I like to think of Grandpa up in heaven, sittin' in his old fishin' chair, catching catfish and Grandma playing her organ and waiting for the rest of the family to get there so we can have a big ole Sunday dinner again!  They had a hard life financially and with Grandpa's health, but a rich one in other ways.  I love them both so much and am thankful to have had them in my life for as long as I did.

Till next time..........God Bless!
